Frequently Asked Questions!
What exactly is SHARE?
It’s a self-funding, not-for-profit organization that
rewards
volunteers with substantial savings on delicious food items. It started back in
the ‘90s to provide a benefit to those who give their time and talents to help
others. There are SHARE host sites like ours all over the US – over 300 sites in
Florida alone!
Who can participate?
Membership in SHARE is offered at no charge to anyone who is, has been, or will
be volunteering their time here at Tampa Unity. Think of it as a free discount
food co-op for volunteers – providing great food and produce to its members for
a surprisingly low cost. The only thing you pay for is the food you order.
How much does the food cost?
The Basic Package is $18, but you can order any number of the Basic, Select, or
Special items that are offered each month. There is a minimum order requirement
of $6.00, but there is no maximum. Check out this month’s “menu” is on the back
page of this brochure for all the items and prices.
How do I sign up?
The SHARE team takes orders on Sundays after each service. Once you’ve looked
over the month’s “menu” and decided what you want, just fill out an order form
in duplicate and pay in cash (or EBTs). You’ll keep one of the forms as your
receipt and bring it back with you on the Saturday distribution day (D-Day).
Why do I have to pay in cash – and in advance?
Thousands of people sign up for SHARE at hundreds of sites around Florida each
month, so depositing cash instead of checks speeds up the process and cuts down
on problems. Once all the orders are in from around the state, SHARE’s food
brokers have the financial ability to start “volume power-buying,” getting the
best deals on meats and fresh produce for its members.
How often are the food packages distributed?
The great food packages are distributed once a month, on
D-Day – usually the fourth Saturday. When you sign up, you’ll receive a receipt
that includes a list of what you’ve bought, along with the D-Day date and
pick-up time.
What happens on D-Day?
You’ll be contacted during the week before D-Day to remind you to pick up your
food that Saturday. Just come to Tampa Unity between 10:30 and 11:30 that
morning, present your receipt, and pick up your package. It’s as easy as that!
You can also sign up that day for the next month’s package.
What if I lose my receipt?
We keep a copy of your receipt, so if we have your order on file, you can pick
up your package. But keep that receipt in a safe place, just in case!
What if I can’t pick up my package on D-Day?
If you can't make D-Day, you must make arrangements to have someone else pick up
your food package. You'll also need to call Gail Gibson, our Distribution
Coordinator, at 813/334-8432 ahead of time to let her know who that will be. If
your package is not picked up and we haven't heard from you, your food may be
given away. We don't have the freezer space to store packages, so we cannot be
responsible for any items that are left over.
