We know that we are all busy people with crowded schedules, so we will offer each of the classes at two different times:

Pathway Class 1: (new time!) Sun, Feb. 15, 2 - 4 pm or Tues, Feb. 10, 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Pathway Class 2: Sun, Mar. 15, 2 - 4 pm or Tues, Mar. 17, 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Pathway Class 3: Sun, April 5, 2 - 4 pm or Tues, April 7, 6:30 - 8:30 pm

Each series of four classes is offered twice during the year, and they are a requirement for a voting membership at Tampa Unity.

These upcoming classes will answer questions that you may have about the Bible, metaphysics, Jesus, God, and theology. You will gain a clear understanding of Unity as a way of life and philosophy. And you will learn how the Fillmores used scientific prayer for overcoming their challenges and beginning the Unity movement.

Attending these classes is a great way to meet others at Tampa Unity Church. Many people in our previous New Member Orientations have developed long-lasting relationships.

Journey with us on this pathway to membership, meet other great people, and become an informed, Unity- educated, voting member of Tampa Unity Church. So mark your calendars and make the commitment; we're looking forward to getting to know each of you.

Rich and Abundant Blessings, Allen & Debbie

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL IS HEAVEN ON EARTH!

Summer seems a long way off, but February's crisp, cool days will be gone before you know it. So mark your summer schedule now for Vacation Bible School: June 8 through 12, 9 am to noon. This year's session is called Heaven on Earth ... Where GOD'S LOVE Starts.

Youth Education Director Jean Wynne is already working on this great new program. The children, ages 3 - 13, will come together in a Tree House to learn Unity's five basic principles. There will be crafts, games, snacks, and lessons on day-dreaming (or as we grown-ups call it, meditation!). The program concludes with a special game day.

The suggested love offering is $20.00 per child. Registration is May 3rd through May 24th. And don't forget to sign up to be one of the much loved volunteers that are necessary to make our Vacation Bible School a success. Stop by the Youth Ed Area and see Jean Wynne for more information. You can help create Heaven on Earth!

LEAVE ME ON THE SEABED SATISFIED
By Eugene Ford Runnels

Always seeking waters
flood my low-lying soul
and overflow my soul banks.
Filling me, raising me.
By such attenuation I am part
of the One Sea, simultaneous
sediment of rivulets saying,
"Hi, how are you? Glad to meet you."
I think I will never experience
greater extravagance.

TEDDY BEARS UP-DATE!

THE FIRST SET OF TEDDY BEARS WERE DELIVERED ON JAN 11TH TO THE HOME ASSOCIATION. The Y.O.U. is pictured under a memorial plaque that commemorates the opening in 1924 of the current location.  The Y.O.U. personally delivered each bear, which were very warmly received.  They took several bears to each resident and let them choose their favorite. The activities director said some of the long-time residents asked if the "bear people" were coming to see them this year.  Our Y.O.U.ers thank everyone at Tampa Unity once again for their wonderful support that brought such joy to both the givers and receivers. One Y.O.U.er commented that her face hurt from smiling so much!

SHARE UPDATE

STILL HAVEN'T JOINED THE SHARE FOOD CO-OP CLUB?

Really?

You don't want to save a lot of money on great food - even in these belt-tightening times?

You know, you don't pay a cent to join SHARE here at Tampa Unity. But as a member of this national food coop, you'll save 40% or more on a monthly array of delicious food (from frozen meats and seafood to fresh fruits and vegetables to gourmet coffee). All you pay for is the great food you choose from the monthly menus.

And you don't have to a member of Tampa Unity to enjoy the savings. Let your friends, family, and neighbors know how they can benefit from free membership, too. The only request is that members volunteer in some small way each month at church or in the community. If you haven't checked out the latest monthly offerings, stop by the SHARE table in Fellowship Hall on Sundays, pick up a brochure, and talk with one of our SHARE Team members. Or contact Carol at unityvolunteers@aol.com for more information.

PEACE IN THE NEW YEAR

THE 2009 SEASON FOR NON-VIOLENCE BEGINS JANUARY 30 and continues through April 4. This period of time has been set aside to hold the idea of a world of peace in our daily actions and thoughts. Campaigns across the country and the world will promote nonviolence as a means of transforming and empowering lives and communities.

The Association for Global New Thought has a web site full of new ideas and affirmations to celebrate the Season for Non violence.

The simplest way to support the Season for nonviolence is to incorporate simple statements of peace into your own daily life. Visit agnt.org for more ideas or create your own!

VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH

SOME OF OUR WONDERFUL VOLUNTEERS go way above and beyond! Take some time to personally thank each of our Volunteers of the Month for all they do to make Tampa Unity the wonderful spiritual home it is.

If you want to honor an extraordinary volunteer at Tampa Unity, simply fill out the Volunteer of the Month nomination form in the bookstore or online at www.unitytampa.org.

Every month a new VOM is chosen and enjoys benefits such as a special parking spot on Sunday morning and our undying gratitude!

GO GREEN TEAM!

ACCORDING TO HARPER'S INDEX, if an Iowa farmer grows a quarter-acre of corn to produce ethanol, he can generate an annual revenue of $300.

However, if the farmer puts a wind turbine on that quarter acre, he could earn $10,000 a year. If you already knew that, then we need you on our Tampa Unity Green Team!

We're looking for a small but dedicated group to continue what we have been doing here at TU to conserve energy and reduce our carbon footprint - and take it to the next level.

If you have some great ideas about how we can expand our green efforts, we want to hear from you! Contact Carol at UnityVolunteers@aol.com

Hospitality Team

WE ALL ENJOY THE OPPORTUNITY TO TAKE A FEW MOMENTS after each Sunday service to congregate in Fellowship Hall, enjoy a cup of coffee and a healthy snack, catch up with our friends, and meet new people.

This is certainly a tradition we all want to see continued, so we need you!

Just help out once a month - that's all we ask. Bring in healthy treats, help us set up and serve, and keep everything running smoothly. However you want to get involved, we'll appreciate it - and so will the rest of our congregation!

So sign up this Sunday to be part of the Hospitality Team or contact Carol at UnityVolunteers@aol.com to see how you can help out.

GOOD NEWS!

Many of you have been asking about my health, so I want to let you know that my pulmonary specialists recently told me that the issue I had has been resolved. Some precautionary measures are being taken until the hematologist has made some determinations. I want to thank all of you for your prayers and for holding good thoughts.

I recently started reading a relatively new book, The Spiritual Journey of Charles Fillmore, written by Neal Vahle. He spent several years doing the research for this book, and much of that time was spent in the archives at the Unity School's library. As I write this article, it is Sunday and I am sitting in my room at Unity Village, Missouri. I am here for the mid-year committee meetings, and it is a bitter, cold winter day with snow on the way. Staying here on the grounds of Unity Village, I experience the spirit of Charles and Myrtle all around. Their spirit and the result of their work is apparent and unavoidable.

Vahle opens the introduction to his book with, "Charles Fillmore was a metaphysical teacher and healer, a writer and thinker who, from the beginning of his work in 1889 until his death in 1948, made a notable contribution to the development of spirituality and religion in America." I would add that he was a great adventurer.

Charles had a strong belief that it was through intuition that men and women were able to know and make contact with the Christ Spirit within. Intuition, according to Charles, represented the "direct knowing capacity of the mind." It is the faculty "that unites us to the divine being, the channel through which we hold direct communion with God." Intuition came to him as an extremely compelling inner voice. It was during one of his deep meditations that the name for this movement, Unity, came to him from that compelling voice. "Our 'still small voice' is always so nearly right that we tremble when we go contrary to its suggestions."

For me, that compelling inner voice is always a nudging, a sense that I should or should not do one thing or another. And my experience has been that those nudgings are always right. It's a reminder to me that my intuition is not to be ignored. It is my friend, my guide, my "help in every need." If we are to be able to accept the truth of the reality of the divine inner presence, then our faith must be strong. As we trust our intuition and act upon it, our experience reinforces our faith. Like a snowball rolling downhill, faith becomes bigger and stronger. What a concept!

Love and Blessings,
Rev Allen and Rev Debbie

  • IS UNITY SPIRITUAL OR RELIGIOUS?
  • WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN RELIGIOUS AND SPIRITUAL?

Religion refers to a system of faith and worship. One definition of Spirit is the soul or heart as the seat of feelings or sympathies. Spiritual is defined as pertaining to, or consisting of, spirit.

Spirituality & Health magazine tackled this subject in their February 2005 issue. The article included six true- or-false statements from the Religious Fundamentalism Scale developed by psychologists Bruce Hunsberger and Bob Altemeyer in 1992. This measure has been tested with Christian, Jewish, Islamic, and Hindu populations. Here are the statements:

    1. It is more important to believe in God and the right religion than to be a good person.
    2. Of all the people on this earth, one group has a special relationship with God because it believes the most in his revealed truths and tries the hardest to follow his laws.
    3. The long-established traditions in religion show the best way to honor and serve God and should never be compromised.
    4. There is a religion on earth that teaches God's truth without error.
    5. One must belong to the one, true religion to lead the best, most meaningful life.
    6. Whenever science and sacred scripture conflict, science must be wrong.
Conservative Christians, 80% of the respondents, said it was more important to believe in God and the right religion than to be a good person. One third of those who responded said that science must be wrong if it conflicted with sacred scripture.

Based on Unity's five basic principles, would you say Unity is Spiritual or Religious?

    1. God is absolute good, everywhere present.
    2. Human beings have a spark of divinity within them, the Christ spirit within. Their very essence is of God, and therefore, they are also inherently good.
    3. Human beings create their experiences by the activity of their thinking. Everything in the manifest realm has its beginning in thought.
    4. Prayer is creative thinking that heightens the connection with God-Mind and therefore brings forth wisdom, healing, prosperity, and everything good.
    5. Knowing and understanding the laws of life, also called Truth, are not enough. A person must also live the truth that he or she knows.
Unity's principles have evolved over time, and these five principles were written in 1991. Ask yourself if these principles ring true for you. If any of these principles make you uncomfortable, seek guidance from within, just as Charles and Myrtle Fillmore did so many years ago.

The numerous Christian doctrines led Charles to state, "In this Babel, I will go to headquarters. If I am spirit and this God they talk so much about is Spirit, we can somehow communicate, or the whole thing is a fraud." Eventually, he began having "exceedingly realistic dreams" that convinced him that Spirit was giving him guidance.

He said, "The most important phase of my experience was the opening of my spiritual nature." How does Spirit get through to you? For me it's in my intuition: if I listen, it guides me; if I ignore it, it goes silent.

According to Pew Research, 28% of American adults have left the faith in which they were raised in favor of another religion - or no religion at all. If change in affiliation from one type of Protestantism to another is included, roughly 44% of adults have either switched religious affiliation, moved from being unaffiliated with any religion to being affiliated with a particular faith, or dropped any connection to a specific religious tradition altogether. *

This shift in religious affiliations suggests that many have grown tired of rigid, unchanging dogma, and they favor connecting with God spiritually rather than with dogma or ritual. I think Unity is a Spiritual philosophy for anyone who has grown weary of churches proclaiming "we have the only way." Take the test and answer these questions for yourself and decide "Am I spiritual or religious?" Let me know the results, and if you have questions, let's talk.

  • VISIONING TEAMS RECONVENE FEBRUARY 28TH
  • FOR THOSE OF YOU WONDERING HOW TO GET MORE INVOLVED AT TAMPA UNITY, FEBRUARY MIGHT BE THE PERFECT OPPORTUNITY!

    What Are Visioning Meetings?

These meetings are facilitated and organized events where ideas are conceptualized, evaluated, adopted or rejected, and mapped for implementation. We meet as one large group first to discuss issues relevant to all teams; then individual groups meet to adopt/plan missions and tasks; and finally meet again as one large group to eat lunch and review all group efforts.

A large majority of Tampa Unity's programs, activities, marketing/business ideas, and building and ground improvements emerge from these meetings. Providing a quality, spiritual experience for congregants and their families is at the core of all actions related to Visioning efforts, and volunteers from the congregation drive the decisions and process.

The volunteers who attend these meetings are a wide range of congregants that includes: Ministers, Board Members, employees of the church, members and non-members. Anyone willing to share their ideas and help is welcomed!

We also have a wide variety of topic areas which allows volunteers to serve in the areas they are most interested in. Existing groups include: Children & Family Programs, Church Growth, Facilities, Grounds, Marketing, Music Ministry, Pastoral Care, and Volunteer Programs.

Accomplishments of these groups are too many to list, but include just about everything you see, experience, and participate in at Tampa Unity!

How Long Have Visioning Meetings Existed?

The concept was started with a meeting called Future Search 2000, and has evolved from there. The current format has been underway since August 2006 and we will begin planning for our official fourth season in August 2009.

How Often Do Visioning Meetings Occur?

Believe it or not, past years have only included two large gatherings per year. For the 2008-2009 season the collective group will meet three times. The schedule for each season is as follows:

    Meeting 1 is held in August to plan for the September - June season;

    Meeting 2 is held in February to discuss/monitor progress;

Meeting 3 is held in June to report on completed efforts.

Individual groups meet and communicate as needed in between these official meetings to accomplish the mission and tasks they willingly adopt. Sometimes these meetings are held on Sunday before or after church, and there are some groups who meet via phone occasionally as well.

    How Can You Participate?

Our next meeting will be held Saturday, February 28th from 9:00 - 1:00 in Fellowship Hall and beverages, snacks and lunch will be provided. Just show up and select the group of your interest. That's all there is to it!

Please RSVP your interest in participating to nmercurio@leadershiptrainingsys.com or see me on Sundays and let me know!

  • MUSIC, MUSIC, MUSIC!
  • Happy new year, everybody. It's a new year with lots of new opportunities.

For those of you who missed the David Roth concert at Tampa Unity earlier this month, you get another chance to see him when Clearwater Unity Church presents a Posi-Palooza concert on the 6th of February, a Friday night. You can check out David and his music at www.davidroth music.com.

Also performing is the fabulous Jana Stanfield (www.janastanfield.com). Either one of these performers would be worth the drive. Tom Kimmel, an extraordinarily unique and powerful songwriter and performer, will be performing with them (www.tomkimmel.com). Of course, Richard Mekdeci and Sue K. Riley will be there, as well.

This will be a great show, and you can get tickets in the bookstore for a savings off the door price. I'll see you at the concert.

Tom will also be playing at the Tampa Unity services on February 8th.

Please support these wonderful musicians who are dedicated to promoting our positive spiritual message.

  • THE TITHING CHALLENGE
  • ONE OF THE THINGS I LOVE AND CONTINUE TO BE AWED BY IS THAT EACH OF US AT TAMPA UNITY IS ON OUR OWN SPIRITUAL JOURNEY.

Many times, I would prefer to be helping others on their journey instead of facing the monsters that are mine; however, our monsters remain in place until we can see them, feel them, get to know them, and release their power over us.

I have found this absolutely true as I have began my journey into Tithing. Our church has had two national speakers this past year on just this topic: David Friedman and Edwine Gaines. While I found their workshops inspiring and loved what they shared, my immediate thoughts were that they both must be rich, they don't question their job security, and they don't have any of the financial concerns that the rest of us have. Ten percent of an abundance of cash is always so much easier than ten percent of an already challenged checkbook.

It took me a while to realize the relationship between their thoughts and their reality.

I have had the honor of spending a lot of time with David Friedman this past year. I have been blessed to sit with him for hours questioning the validity of this whole tithing principle.

He just smiles at my questions and continues to explain that money is not what this is all about. Money is just a measurable channel of our abundance and, of course, our abundance is a reflection of our current thought process.

If you find this as confusing as I did, hold on - it gets worse (or better). It seems that the more financially we are challenged, the more we should be giving. OK, that goes against all I have ever learned. If you are having financial challenges, isn't it because you are spending too much?

Each of us holds a thought about how prosperous we are. In reality, abundance, as taught in Unity, is available to each of us right here, right now. So how do we access that abundance? Through our thoughts and beliefs.

Vinnie and I started tithing after Edwine's talk. It was a leap of faith for both of us. It has been amazing to see that as our thoughts change, so do our lives. I won't say I am rolling around in millions, but it has become commonplace at our household to see dollars fall out of the dryer every time we do laundry.

Abundance always comes from unexpected sources, but it always comes. I am beginning to understand and appreciate the concept of "Change your thoughts and change your world."

  • LOW TIDE TREASURE
  • IT IS A MYSTERY WHAT LIES BENEATH THE WATER OF THE RIVER, or the sea or lake. I used to dreamed of streams and rivulets, clear, running water, golden coins tumbling in the pebbles, twinkling in the glassy waters. I dreamed of tides receded, their wondrous secrets revealed: uncovered seascapes of ruins and ... treasure!

The Hillsborough River runs behind my house. The facets of its fluid surface reflect sunlight like diamonds, its depths concealed in darkness. But, sometimes in the winter, the water recedes. The river is tidal. It has a secret to reveal.

Mired in the river's bottom is what remains of the Kate Dale, a small, but speedy sailing vessel, a Confederate blockade runner scuttled by Union troops in the fall of 1863. As it listed to the bottom that long ago October, who knew it would stand sentinel for so long on this river's edge, a thing of local legend, a fishing spot for snook, a treasure in my backyard.

There is not much left now but timbers protruding from the mud, barnacle encrusted stumps, eroded by wind, water and time, visible only at the lowest of tides.

The day after Christmas, the water drained far into the middle of the river, exposing more of the wreck than we had ever seen before. My 8-year-old daughter, Allyson, ever the explorer, slipped into her pink rubber boots and ventured along the seawall. The newly created shore was mucky - but firm - as she made her way to the wreck. She balanced across a barely submerged timber and perched upon the stump that had surfaced furthest, the first to make contact with these relics in who knows how many years.

No golden coins on the bottom of this river, no treasure other than a child's excited laughter, a squeal of joy as she splashed the river water, seeking her own adventures and dreams on the river's shore, at the extreme low tide of a winter's day.
